This morning, a short sleeve cotton shirt seemed like a good idea. And a tie? Certainly not prudent when the TV weather guy is warning about heat strokes.
The thermometer is climbing toward three digits, and the idea of sucking in your tummy when an attractive twenty-something walks by isn’t worth the effort. You’re just going to pass out, and it’s conceivable she may not know CPR. You have been thinking about buying a larger belt or at least punching an extra hole in your old brown leather one. It may not look too nice, but you shouldn't be wearing a brown belt with black trousers anyway. Besides, the only reason she smiled at you in the first place is because you reminded her of her Grampa.
Interminable meetings, black sludge that passes for coffee, rush hour traffic in sweltering heat, and circumventing Metro's Safe Track is just more than you want to deal with right now.
You suddenly remember you have some unused vacation time, and begin daydreaming about taking off for a week or two. The beach? No, too hot. A visit to the relatives? No, that's what holidays are for. How about camping? No, sleeping on the hard ground is only fun for kids.
You brilliantly conclude a Staycation is the answer, and begin making a list of the variety of opportunities available in your own community.
There are monuments you haven't had time to see, free concerts at The Sculpture Garden, golfing at East Potomac Park, hiking The C&O Canal, strolling around the new Southwest Waterfront Redevelopment, and rooting for The Nats at their impressive stadium would all be enjoyable. A play at Arena Stage, enjoying the Arboretum while trying to catch a glimpse of Freedom and Liberty, DC's celebrity eagles, watching the pandas at the zoo, or a lunch cruise on the Odyssey are all tempting. Meeting friends for a cold, refreshing cocktail at Hotel W's rooftop bar, or hanging out at The Midlands Beer Garden would be pleasant, and that flight simulator at the Air & Space museum sure did look like fun.
I hope you will have a relaxing staycation and a great time exploring our beautiful city. When you head out for your adventures, be sure to slather on a thick coat of sunscreen; those sizzling Lazy, Hazy, Crazy, Days of Summer can be harmful to your skin.
Whether you are walking, biking, or zooming along on a Segway, be sure to keep a bottle of water and your "I've Fallen and I Can't Get Up" button close by. And for Heavens' sake, when a young person offers you their seat on the Metro, take it!
